Dental implant treatment is the best way to replace missing or damaged teeth. Dental implants can be used to treat a variety of dental problems and can be used to replace missing teeth, as a support for a fixed denture, as a support for a fixed bridge or even simply to replace a single or multiple missing tooth/teeth.
Dental implants are small cylindrical titanium devices that are placed into the jaw in the place of a missing tooth root. The implant itself acts just like a normal tooth root as a fixture for a crown and once placed, it will last a lifetime.
Implants, if properly placed, will feel and function exactly like a real tooth and often patients who undergo implant treatment forget that they have even had an implant after a few years as the end result is so realistic and natural.
Implants are rather costly but are by far the best way to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Expect to pay around $2000 for a single dental implant.
Some people are not suitable for implants and as such, anyone looking to have an implant placed will need to book a consultation with their local implant dentist in order to asses their suitability. Often x-rays will need to be taken in order to work out if the bone levels in the jaw are adequate enough to support an implant and other factors will be taken into account. Some reasons why you may not be suitable for an implant include: if you have gum disease, if you are a heavy smoker, if you have any medical conditions such as diabetes, if you bleed easily and excessively, if you are under 16 years of age.
If you are suitable for an implant, the treatment process will take around 6-9 months, depending on how quickly the bone in the jaw heals over and adheres to the titanium implant. For most people, a 3 month healing time will apply although for others, especially older people, the process can take considerably longer.
After the implant has fully adhered to the bone, the gum can be re-opened and a post 9or abutment) fitted into the implant. The dentist will then take scans or moulds of the protruding abutment and a crown can be made to fit over it. If the dentist has a CEREC machine, they will be able to make the crown in-house in around one hour. If however, they do not have a CEREC machine, the ceramic crown will have to be created by a dental technician which will take around 2-4 weeks.
Once fully fitted, the implant, abutment and crown will be permanent and will look and feel completely natural. Implants should last a lifetime and should be looked after in the same way as a completely natural tooth.
